The 8c had some go, it just wasn't a supercar. That wasn't the point

I guess I don't understand the question. How's the 8C an automotive turkey, all show and no go? 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds is 'no go'?

It should've been, but Ferrari didn't allow it, and had a crappy gearbox.

0-60 and quarter mile times are important if you talk about muscle cars, but most reviews said that it wasn't such a good car. Sure, pretty as 100 bikini models, but not a pure breed.

The answer is Delorean.
130HP in US Trim good for 0-60 in 10.5 seconds.

Its fast just not good at being fast. Doesn't handle that well and doesn't like going fast, and the transmission is crap.

The 8C definitely had go. I'd liken it to an Aston. Not the fastest in it's class but easily the prettiest. I'd take it over it's competition in a heart beat.

All of us would have it over anything else, but that doesn't make it less of a turkey. Apparently the 4C is a really good sports car, can't wait to try one.

The DeLorean is a great choice, but I would argue that the Karmann Ghia was slightly better looking, and slightly worse in performance.

Giugiaro made a nice design. Too bad Subaru isn't hiring Italian design houses for more cars.

I just don't see it as a turkey. That makes Astons turkeys as well. A turkey to me would be a Fiero or Delorean. The 8C is still plenty fast.

I kind of see the 90s being a mid-life crisis for designs until the 90s went and gave us the beige people for the noughties.

Fiero - turkey
DeLorean - turkey
Prowler - ugly turkey
The 8C? I don't think so Tim.
The 8C by the numbers is one hell of a respectable car.
0-62 mph, 4.2 sec
Top Speed, 181 mph
1/4 mile, 12.4 sec @117 mph
This is not a turkey. It's a lovely looking, sporty car that'll melt your heart. One journo wrote that it has the "sexiest and meanest sounding exhaust note I've ever heard." Handling impressions have been favourable. Understeer is more than a spirited driver wants but it is lovely to drive.

well 130hp in a V6 when Ford's 302 made 140hp really wasn't a turkey for it's day.
People seem to forget the early 80s ALL cars were like this. The performance revival didn't really start until early-mid 80s and this car came RIGHT before that. A turbo was planned and would of been produced right at the time the hp wars started and Mustangs and Japanese cars all were hitting 200hp (1983+)

Well, just because top gear said it couldn't handle doesn't mean it can't.
They're known to be much more of funny show than a proper car show..

Ford's 302 in 1981 made 140hp, Deloreans V6 made 130. Not a turkey but period-correct.
Cars like that didn't make power until around 1983/1984. In 1981 one of the fastest cars sold in the US was a 280ZX with (gasp) 180hp which was turbo, more a sign of things to come than regular business.

It was a turkey. It cost upwards of $25k in the day, which was a lot. BMW 6 series was sill making ~180hp. Porsche 928 ~215HP, Porsche 944~150HP.
Comparing it to the engines in $6500 Mustangs is comical.

BMW 6 series was also well over 500lbs heavier about than a Delorean. Those were huge 3500lbs cars where the DMC-12 was 2700. 928 was also a monster.
130hp in a 2700lb car is not slow at all for that era and comparing a 2.9l to a 4.9l engine making only 10hp less I think is a valid comparison. It has far more hp per liter than a car that would turn to be a giant killer in later years to give you perspective on the malaise of the early 80s.
Lotus Esprit at this time only made 140hp in USDM and weighed something around 200lbs less, nobody claims that is a turkey. Delorean has more torque than that car of course. For the 1981 model year (1980 sales year) the 944 didn't exist yet. That car weighed the same, tiny bit more, and made 20 more hp. Delorean is not far off of that and certainly better than the 924. Also in EUDM DMC-12 made 150hp, the same as a 944 also being a more exclusive car.

The DeLorean was period-correct in power. However it gets the turkey label because its looks were ahead of its time, its stainless body was considered to be revolutionary and the thing just looked like it should go a million miles an hour.
Compared to its styling contemporaries - Ferrari 308 et al (yes I know they were about 1/2 the price, about $64,000 vs $125,ooo in 2013 dollars) it was a turd.
